A particularly effective leader sees the ends amidst the overwhelming hubbub of the present. Opposition, complexity, danger, and distracting opportunities threaten to paralyze or draw the leader off course.

The challenge is to peer beyond the current to see what is not visible to the natural eye in order to avoid the paralysis, remain on course, and press toward the true goal. It is a skill first grounded on a foundation of what is truly important and then honed through practice, experience, and training. Let’s start with the foundation. Moses had it.

Affirming one of history’s greatest leaders, scripture says, “By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:24-27).

God spoke and Moses believed. His vision began with little information, yet enough to set a course and start on mission. When challenges raged he returned to the Source, sought assurance and direction, and in faith proceeded forward. While God spoke to Moses face to face (Exodus 33:11), today He speaks to us in the power of His word. That surely comes through bathing in the scriptures and is amplified in biblical fellowship and through encounters ordained by Him.

Our part? Set that foundation. Increasingly grow in it. Respond with mind and will fixed on that which is sure. Then God will progressively enable seeing around corners that block the naked eye.
